Beyond Blue Ridge: 7 North Georgia Mountain Towns Worth Exploring

Beyond Blue Ridge: 7 North Georgia Mountain Towns Worth Exploring

When people think about visiting the North Georgia mountains, Blue Ridge is usually one of the first places that comes to mind.

And for good reason!

Downtown Blue Ridge is packed with great restaurants, unique shops, beautiful scenery, and plenty of things to do.

But here's something we've learned from living and working in these mountains.

There's a whole lot more to North Georgia than Blue Ridge!

Some of our favorite places are the smaller towns tucked away in the mountains. Places where you can discover a little history, find an incredible hiking trail, enjoy a great meal, or simply slow down and appreciate the beauty around you.

Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or spending an entire week exploring the mountains, here are seven North Georgia towns worth adding to your itinerary.

1. Ellijay – Apples, Antiques, and Mountain Charm 🍎

If Blue Ridge is one of North Georgia's most popular destinations, Ellijay certainly deserves a spot right alongside it.

Known as the Apple Capital of Georgia, Ellijay really comes alive in the fall.

But don't make the mistake of thinking Ellijay is only worth visiting during apple season.

Downtown Ellijay is filled with locally owned shops, restaurants, antique stores, and plenty of small-town charm.

Outside of downtown, you'll find orchards, vineyards, hiking trails, and some incredible mountain scenery.

And if you enjoy spending time outdoors, the nearby Cartecay River offers opportunities for tubing, kayaking, and fishing.

Don't miss:

  • Exploring Historic Downtown Ellijay

  • Visiting the apple orchards along Highway 52

  • Tubing or kayaking the Cartecay River

  • Exploring the trails at Fort Mountain State Park

DFR TIP: If you're visiting in October, the Georgia Apple Festival is one of the area's biggest annual events. Just be prepared for crowds!

2. McCaysville – Two States, One Charming Little Town 🚂

Here's something pretty cool.

You can visit McCaysville, Georgia, walk across the street, and find yourself in Copperhill, Tennessee.

Seriously!

These neighboring towns sit right on the Georgia-Tennessee border, with the Toccoa River becoming the Ocoee River as it crosses into Tennessee.

McCaysville has become a popular destination for visitors looking for something a little different.

You'll find restaurants, shops, riverfront scenery, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to spend an afternoon exploring.

It's also the destination for the popular Blue Ridge Scenic Railway.

Don't miss:

  • Walking between Georgia and Tennessee

  • Exploring the shops in McCaysville and Copperhill

  • Enjoying lunch overlooking the river

  • Riding the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

DFR TIP: McCaysville makes a fantastic half-day adventure from Blue Ridge. Combine a little shopping with lunch and some time enjoying the river.

3. Blairsville – Lakes, Mountains, and Incredible Views 🏔️

If you love mountain scenery, Blairsville needs to be on your list.

Located in Union County, Blairsville offers a quieter mountain-town experience with easy access to some of the most beautiful outdoor destinations in North Georgia.

One of the biggest attractions is Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia.

On a clear day, the views from the observation deck are absolutely spectacular.

You'll also find Lake Nottely nearby, along with waterfalls, hiking trails, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Don't miss:

  • Visiting Brasstown Bald

  • Exploring Vogel State Park

  • Spending time on Lake Nottely

  • Discovering local restaurants and shops around the town square

DFR TIP: Plan your Brasstown Bald visit for a clear day. The mountain views are worth the trip!

4. Hiawassee – Lake Life Meets Mountain Life 🌊

Want mountains and a beautiful lake?

Hiawassee delivers both.

Located along the shores of Lake Chatuge, Hiawassee is one of those places that makes you wonder why you didn't visit sooner.

The combination of mountain scenery and sparkling water creates a setting that's hard to beat.

Spend the day boating, fishing, exploring the lakefront, or simply enjoying the views.

Hiawassee is also home to the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds, which hosts concerts, festivals, and other events throughout the year.

Don't miss:

  • Exploring Lake Chatuge

  • Visiting the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds

  • Taking a scenic drive through the surrounding mountains

  • Enjoying a lakeside meal

DFR TIP: Hiawassee is especially beautiful during the fall when the changing leaves reflect off the lake.

5. Dahlonega – Gold, Wine, and a Beautiful Downtown 🍷

Did you know that one of America's earliest major gold rushes happened right here in North Georgia?

Long before California became famous for gold, prospectors were heading to Dahlonega.

Today, Dahlonega combines that fascinating history with a thriving wine scene and one of the prettiest downtown squares in Georgia.

You can explore the history of the gold rush, visit local wineries, shop downtown, and enjoy some fantastic restaurants.

It's a great destination for couples, families, and anyone who appreciates a little history mixed with mountain charm.

Don't miss:

  • Exploring the Dahlonega Gold Museum

  • Visiting local wineries

  • Walking around the historic downtown square

  • Learning about Georgia's gold rush history

DFR TIP: Dahlonega is a great choice for a couples' day trip. Spend the afternoon exploring wineries and finish with dinner downtown.

6. Helen – A Little Taste of Bavaria in Georgia 🇩🇪

You might not expect to find a Bavarian-style village in the North Georgia mountains.

But that's exactly what you'll discover in Helen.

With its Alpine-inspired architecture, German restaurants, unique shops, and mountain setting, Helen offers a completely different experience from most of the towns in the region.

It's also a popular destination for outdoor adventures.

The Chattahoochee River runs right through town, making tubing a favorite summer activity.

And nearby Unicoi State Park and Anna Ruby Falls offer plenty of opportunities to explore the mountains.

Don't miss:

  • Exploring Helen's Bavarian-style downtown

  • Visiting Anna Ruby Falls

  • Hiking at Unicoi State Park

  • Enjoying German food and local shops

DFR TIP: Helen gets especially busy during Oktoberfest and peak fall foliage season. Plan accordingly!

7. Suches – The Valley Above the Clouds 🌲

We're saving one of North Georgia's quieter destinations for last.

Suches isn't known for a bustling downtown or endless shopping opportunities.

And that's exactly why we love it.

Often called the Valley Above the Clouds, Suches is tucked into the mountains near some of the most scenic roads and hiking trails in Georgia.

This is the place to go when you want to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with nature.

You'll find winding mountain roads, beautiful forests, waterfalls, and access to the Appalachian Trail.

It's also home to one of the most scenic stretches of Highway 60.

Don't miss:

  • Hiking near Woody Gap

  • Exploring the Appalachian Trail

  • Taking a scenic drive along Highway 60

  • Enjoying the peace and quiet of the mountains

DFR TIP: Suches is perfect for travelers who want to spend less time shopping and more time hiking, exploring, and enjoying nature.

The Best Part? You Don't Have to Choose Just One!

That's one of our favorite things about North Georgia.

You can spend one day exploring apple orchards in Ellijay, another enjoying the lake in Hiawassee, and another hiking the mountains around Suches.

Every town has its own personality.

Its own history.

Its own reasons to visit.

And the adventures don't have to end when the sun goes down.

Imagine spending the day exploring the mountains, then returning to your cabin for a relaxing evening.

Maybe you fire up the grill.

Maybe you sit around the fire pit.

Maybe you climb into the hot tub and enjoy the cool mountain air.

Or maybe you do absolutely nothing.

That's the beauty of a North Georgia mountain getaway.
