Fall Is Coming to North Georgia: Your Guide to Leaf Season
There's something special about fall in the North Georgia mountains.
The mornings become crisp. The humidity begins to disappear. You start noticing that first splash of yellow or red on a mountainside that was completely green just a few days earlier.
And then it happens.
North Georgia transforms.
For a few glorious weeks each fall, the mountains surrounding Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Morganton, Blairsville and the rest of North Georgia become a patchwork of red, orange, yellow and green.
Welcome to leaf season.
If you're considering a fall getaway to the North Georgia mountains, here's what you need to know.
When Do the Leaves Change in North Georgia?
This might be the most common question we hear during the fall:
"When is peak color?"
We wish there were a perfect answer.
There isn't.
Fall color depends on several factors, including elevation, temperatures, rainfall and weather patterns. Higher elevations generally begin changing earlier, while lower elevations follow.
That creates something better than a single "peak weekend."
It creates a season.
Generally, visitors begin looking for significant fall color during October, with beautiful conditions often continuing into early November depending on the year and location.
Instead of trying to predict one perfect day months in advance, think of leaf season as a window.
And remember that peak color isn't the only time worth visiting.
Watching the mountains transition from summer green into fall can be every bit as beautiful.
Take a Scenic Drive
You don't have to climb a mountain to enjoy the fall colors.
Sometimes the best way to experience North Georgia in autumn is simply to get in the car and explore.
Drive the mountain roads around Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Morganton, Suches and Blairsville. Take the slower route. Follow a road you've never traveled before. Stop at an overlook.
Part of the fun is not being in a hurry.
Fall is the perfect season to explore the nooks and crannies of North Georgia.
Hit the Trails
Want to experience the colors up close?
Go for a hike.
North Georgia offers everything from easy walks to challenging mountain hikes, along with access to some incredible sections of the Appalachian Trail and Benton MacKaye Trail.
The combination of cooler temperatures and fall color makes this one of our favorite times of year to be outside.
You don't necessarily need an epic hike, either.
Find a trail. Walk for an hour. Listen to the leaves crunch beneath your feet. Look up through the trees.
Sometimes that's enough.
Spend Some Time in Blue Ridge and Ellijay
Fall isn't just happening in the woods.
Downtown Blue Ridge and Ellijay come alive during the season as visitors arrive for mountain weekends, local shopping, restaurants, breweries, wineries, orchards and seasonal events.
Make an afternoon of it.
Explore the shops. Grab something to eat. Visit an orchard. Find a local winery. Then head back into the mountains before sunset.
That's a pretty good North Georgia day.
Don't Forget Apple Season
You can't talk about fall in North Georgia without talking about apples.
Ellijay is famous for them.
Apple houses and orchards throughout the area become destinations themselves during the fall, offering everything from fresh apples and cider to pies, doughnuts and other treats.
If you're visiting during leaf season, an apple orchard belongs on your itinerary.
Just don't blame us when you go home with significantly more apple-related food than you intended to buy.
Then Head Back to the Cabin
This might be our favorite part.
After spending the day hiking, exploring mountain towns, driving scenic roads or visiting an orchard, you get to leave the crowds behind.
Head back to your cabin.
Light the fireplace.
Get in the hot tub.
Sit around the firepit.
Pour your favorite drink and settle onto the porch.
Or do absolutely nothing.
A cabin isn't simply where you sleep during a trip to North Georgia.
It's part of the experience.
And during fall, it might be the best part.
Don't Wait Too Long to Plan Your Fall Getaway
There's a reason fall is one of the most popular seasons in the North Georgia mountains.
The scenery is incredible, the temperatures are comfortable, there is plenty to do, and somehow everything just feels a little better when you're surrounded by mountains covered in fall color.
That popularity also means cabins can book quickly, particularly for October weekends.
If you're considering a fall getaway, now is the time to start planning.
Whether you're looking for a romantic cabin for two, a family getaway, a creekside retreat, a mountain view, a hot tub, a firepit or a place where you can bring the dogs, the DFR Cabin Collection has cabins throughout the North Georgia mountains.
