Where to See the Best Fall Colors in North Georgia

There’s something special about fall in the North Georgia mountains.

Cool mornings. A fire crackling at the cabin. A hot cup of coffee on the porch. And everywhere you look, the mountains begin changing from green to brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red.

If you're planning a fall getaway to Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Blairsville or the surrounding North Georgia mountains, one question probably matters more than any other:

Where can you see the best fall colors?

The good news? You have plenty of choices.

Here are some of our favorite places to experience fall in North Georgia.

When Do Fall Colors Peak in North Georgia?

Timing the leaves perfectly is never an exact science.

Elevation, temperature, rainfall and weather conditions all affect when the leaves change. Generally, fall color begins appearing at the higher elevations first and gradually works its way into the valleys.

For most of North Georgia, October is the month when the transformation really gets underway, with some of the best color often arriving in late October and continuing into early November.

Our advice?

Don't obsess over finding one magical "peak" weekend.

Fall in the mountains is beautiful throughout the season, and changing elevations can often help you find great color even when one particular area isn't at its peak.

1. Brasstown Bald

If you want BIG fall views, start at the highest point in Georgia.

At 4,784 feet, Brasstown Bald offers incredible panoramic views across the North Georgia mountains. On a clear fall day, you can look across ridge after ridge covered in autumn color.

Because of its elevation, Brasstown Bald is also one of the places where fall color can begin showing earlier in the season.

Bring your camera. You'll want it.

2. Vogel State Park

Located near Blairsville at the base of Blood Mountain, Vogel State Park is one of our favorite places to experience fall.

Lake Trahlyta surrounded by colorful mountains creates one of those classic North Georgia fall scenes that almost doesn't look real.

Take a walk around the lake, explore one of the hiking trails, pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it.

If you're staying in one of our Blairsville-area cabins, Vogel is an easy addition to your fall getaway.

3. The Aska Adventure Area

Want to get out of the car and INTO the fall colors?

Head toward the Aska Adventure Area outside Blue Ridge.

The area offers miles of hiking and mountain biking trails through the Chattahoochee National Forest, with trails climbing mountain ridges, passing through hardwood forests and descending toward Lake Blue Ridge.

Or simply drive Aska Road.

It's one of our favorite scenic drives around Blue Ridge, especially when the leaves begin changing.

Roll down the windows, slow down and enjoy the ride.

4. Lake Blue Ridge

There's something about fall colors reflecting off the water that makes Lake Blue Ridge especially beautiful this time of year.

Visit the Lake Blue Ridge Recreation Area for an easy walk, bring a picnic or simply find a spot to enjoy the scenery.

You get colorful hardwood forests, mountains and water all in the same view.

Hard to beat that combination.

5. The Toccoa River

The Toccoa River is beautiful year-round, but fall adds another layer.

Imagine rushing mountain water surrounded by red, yellow and orange leaves.

Drive through the Aska area and stop along the river, explore one of the nearby trails, or make your way toward the famous Toccoa River Swinging Bridge.

Bring lunch and make an adventure out of it.

6. Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

Don't feel like hiking?

Let the train do the work.

The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway leaves from Downtown Blue Ridge and follows the Toccoa River through the North Georgia countryside toward McCaysville and Copperhill.

During fall, the journey becomes one long leaf-peeping experience.

It's especially fun for families, couples or anyone who wants to experience the colors without climbing a mountain.

Fall rides are extremely popular, so planning ahead is a good idea.

7. Benton MacKaye Trail

If your idea of seeing fall color involves hiking directly through it, the Benton MacKaye Trail belongs on your list.

The trail winds through some of the most beautiful parts of the North Georgia mountains and connects with an enormous network of hiking opportunities throughout the region.

Hike during the day.

Hot tub at night.

That's a pretty good fall vacation.

8. Downtown Blue Ridge & the Surrounding Countryside

You don't have to disappear deep into the forest to enjoy the season.

Spend a morning exploring Downtown Blue Ridge, then drive just a few minutes outside town and watch the scenery change completely.

Country roads wind past farms, orchards, forests and mountain views.

One of the great things about visiting Blue Ridge in the fall is that you can spend part of the day shopping and eating downtown and the rest surrounded by nature.

9. Ellijay Apple Country

Fall and Ellijay just belong together.

Drive through the countryside surrounding Ellijay and you'll find mountain views, colorful forests and apple orchards throughout the area.

Stop for apples, cider or an apple pie and enjoy the scenery along the way.

You don't necessarily need a destination.

Sometimes the drive IS the attraction.

10. Your Cabin Porch

We saved one of the best spots for last.

You don't always have to go anywhere.

One of our favorite ways to experience fall in North Georgia is sitting on the porch of a mountain cabin with absolutely nothing on the schedule.

Make some coffee.

Grab a blanket.

Listen to the leaves rustle through the trees.

Light the firepit when the sun goes down.

And enjoy the fact that for a few days, you don't have anywhere else you need to be.

Make a Weekend of It

The best way to experience North Georgia fall color isn't by rushing from overlook to overlook.

Give yourself a few days.

Take a scenic drive one morning. Hike the next. Explore Blue Ridge or Ellijay. Visit an orchard. Find a waterfall. Sit beside the Toccoa River.

And leave some time to do absolutely nothing at your cabin.
