Why October Is One of the Best Months to Visit North Georgia
AddThere’s something about October in the North Georgia mountains.
Maybe it’s waking up to cool air coming through the trees.
Maybe it’s sitting outside with a cup of something warm while the mountains slowly light up around you.
Maybe it’s the leaves, the festivals, the fire pits, the hot tubs or just the feeling that comes with fall in the mountains.
Whatever it is, October is one of our favorite times of the year in Blue Ridge and Ellijay.
And if you’ve never experienced fall in North Georgia, this might be the year to change that.
🍁 The Mountains Start Showing Off
Obviously, we have to start with the leaves.
October brings the beginning of fall color to North Georgia, with the mountains gradually changing from green to shades of yellow, orange and red.
The fun part is that the scenery can look completely different from one week to the next.
Take a drive through the mountains. Hike one of the local trails. Visit a waterfall. Ride the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. Or don't go anywhere at all.
Sometimes the best view is the one from the deck of your cabin.
🍂 The Weather Is Just About Perfect
Summer humidity starts disappearing, the days become more comfortable and the evenings get cool.
It’s hiking weather.
It’s downtown Blue Ridge weather.
It’s winery weather.
It’s sit-on-the-deck-and-do-absolutely-nothing weather.
And when the sun goes down and the temperature drops?
That's when October in the mountains gets even better.
🔥 Fire Pit Season Is Here
There are few things better than a cool mountain night around a fire.
Grab a chair.
Throw on a sweatshirt.
Make some s’mores.
Open a bottle of wine.
Tell stories.
Or just sit there and listen to the woods.
One of the reasons we love cabin vacations is that some of the best moments aren't necessarily the things you planned.
Sometimes it's just an hour around the fire with people you love.
♨️ Hot Tubs Are Better When It's Cold Outside
We’ll say it.
October is hot tub season.
A hot tub is great any time of year, but there’s something completely different about climbing into one when the mountain air is cool.
Even better if you're surrounded by trees changing colors.
And yes, plenty of cabins in the DFR Cabin Collection have hot tubs. We know what people come to the mountains for. 😁
🎃 Fall Festivals Are Everywhere
October is also one of the busiest months for festivals and events throughout North Georgia.
Blue Ridge, Ellijay and the surrounding mountain communities come alive with fall celebrations, arts and crafts, food, live music and plenty of opportunities to spend a day exploring.
And, of course, Ellijay is apple country.
October is right in the heart of apple season, making it the perfect time to visit an orchard, grab some fresh apples, pick up an apple pie or cider and enjoy one of the traditions that makes fall in North Georgia special.
🥾 Get Outside
October might be our favorite hiking month.
The cooler temperatures make it much more comfortable to explore the trails, and changing leaves make familiar places feel completely different.
You don't have to tackle an all-day hike, either.
Take a short walk to a waterfall.
Visit the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge.
Explore the Aska trails.
Walk around Lake Blue Ridge.
Or find a quiet trail and see where it takes you.
The point isn't how far you go.
Just get outside.
🍷 Slow Down a Little
This might be our favorite thing about October.
Fall seems to give you permission to slow down.
Spend an afternoon at a North Georgia winery.
Walk through downtown Blue Ridge without being in a hurry.
Grab lunch somewhere you've never been.
Sit on the cabin deck.
Read a book.
Watch the leaves fall.
Take a nap.
You don't have to fill every minute of a mountain vacation with something to do.
Sometimes the whole reason for coming here is to do less.
🏔️ There's Just Something About the Mountains in October
We live here, and even we get excited about October.
There's an energy in the mountains when fall arrives. The mornings feel different. The air smells different. The views start changing.
And suddenly sitting beside a fire or soaking in a hot tub feels like exactly where you're supposed to be.
If you've been thinking about taking a North Georgia mountain getaway, October is a pretty great excuse to finally do it.
Come see the leaves.
Explore Blue Ridge and Ellijay.
Eat some apples.
Hike a trail.
Sit around a fire.
Get in the hot tub.
And maybe spend a little time doing absolutely nothing.
We think you're going to like it here.
